Gurez Valley — Kashmir's Hidden Crown

One of the most remote and breathtakingly beautiful valleys in the Indian subcontinent, barely touched by mass tourism.

Best Time to Visit

June to September is ideal — meadows bloom, roads are clear, temperatures range 10–25°C. May and October offer fewer crowds and stunning autumn colours. The valley is inaccessible by road in winter (November–April) due to heavy snowfall.

Peak Season: July – August

Inner Line Permit

As a border area, Gurez Valley requires an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for non-residents of J&K. Permits are easily obtained at the DC office in Bandipora or online via the J&K Government portal. We assist all our guests with permit formalities.

We help arrange your ILP

How to Reach

Fly into Srinagar Airport, then drive to Bandipora (~70km, 2hrs). From Bandipora, the Gurez road climbs over the Razdan Pass (3,300m) — a 90km drive (~3–4 hrs). Baduab/Tulail is a further 30–40km beyond Dawar (Gurez town). Shared taxis and private cabs are available from Bandipora.

~6–7 hrs total from Srinagar

Habba Khatoon Peak

The iconic pyramid-shaped peak named after the legendary Kashmiri poetess Habba Khatoon dominates the Gurez skyline. A symbol of the valley, it's best viewed from Dawar and remains one of J&K's most photographed mountains.

Iconic Valley Landmark

Dard-Shina Culture

The indigenous Dard community, speaking the ancient Shina language, inhabit Gurez. Renowned for their distinct culture, traditional wooden architecture, and warm hospitality, the Dards offer visitors a rare window into Himalayan tribal heritage that has remained unchanged for centuries.

Authentic Cultural Experience

Unforgettable Adventures

Gurez Valley and its surroundings offer some of the most thrilling and serene experiences in the Himalayas.

01

High-Altitude Trekking

Trek through alpine meadows, glacial moraines, and remote shepherd trails in the Tulail and Gurais ranges. Routes range from easy meadow walks to challenging ridge crossings.

02

Kishanganga Fly Fishing

The Kishanganga River is famous for its pristine trout populations. Angling amid mountain scenery is an experience unlike any other in J&K.

03

Village Cultural Tours

Visit traditional Dard-Shina villages, interact with local artisans, and witness age-old customs, wooden architecture, and folk music of the Gurez people.

04

Stargazing & Astrophotography

With zero light pollution, Gurez Valley's night skies are among the clearest in South Asia — the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye on clear nights.

05

Meadow & Alpine Photography

Capture Habba Khatoon Peak, rolling margs (meadows), wildflower fields, and the river's turquoise waters. Every direction is a postcard.

06

Bird Watching

Gurez is home to rare Himalayan species including the Western Tragopan, Snow Leopard (big cat sighting possible!), musk deer, and dozens of migratory birds.
